Liverpool schoolchildren within feet of Pope Benedict on London visit

DOZENS of Merseyside schoolchildren got within feet of Pope Benedict on his visit to London yesterday.

Pupils and staff from 13 Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of Liverpool travelled to the capital to be part of the Papal visit.

Many managed to get to the front row of the barriers when he drove past in the Popemobile and several teachers described the experience as ‘beautiful’.

Ronan Dunne, headteacher of St Columba’s RC Primary School in Huyton, said: “It was absolutely brilliant and very inspiring. We have explained to our children that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“We were within feet of the Pope when he travelled past and he blessed us on his way.

“When he addressed all the children he said many of the same things we teach in Catholic education.

“He is very much a Pope for our time.

“The children were excellent and we are very proud of them.”
